Obituary for Dorothy W. “Dottye” Compton

Dorothy W. “Dottye” Compton, age 80, died peacefully on January 22, 2018, after a short illness with her family at her side.

Dottye was born in Clifton, TN in 1937 to Russell and Myrtle Warren.  She graduated from Wayne County High School in Clifton.  Following graduation, she moved to Memphis.   She began working at Walgreens, where she met her husband, Leonard. She started in the beauty department before finding her niche as a bookkeeper. She retired after forty years with the company.

Married to a pharmacist, Dottye was active in the Women’s Auxillary of the Tennessee Pharmacist’s Association. She enjoyed annual convention trips where the ladies played many spirited games of Tonk and Bunco. She and Leonard also enjoyed annual trips to Hot Springs, both to celebrate their anniversary and to watch the horses run. Dottye was possibly best known for her skills in the kitchen and was happiest when cooking for family and friends. After retirement, Dottye enjoyed an even bigger role in participating in group functions and hosted many family gatherings, especially pool parties for all the “kids”.

Dottye is survived by her husband, Leonard, their daughter Cindy & her partner, Malissa, and her grandpug, Rascal.  She is also survived by three sisters, Clara Johnson of Munford, Nina Cantrell of Bartlett, and Flo Kemp of Arlington, and one brother, JR Warren (Ilona) of Arlington. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Dottye’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Forest Hill East in Memphis. Visitation will be from 10am-noon, with a service at noon.  Burial will follow.  Brother Bill George will officiate. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dottye’s life.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of CVICU at Methodist North for their compassionate care during her last days.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Leonard & Dottye Compton Endowment Fund at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, Mid-South Pug Rescue, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
