Obituary for Russell C. Hurley

Russell Carl Hurley entered the gates of heaven on Thursday, January 12, 2017 after a four year battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 65. He was a devoted husband and recently celebrated his 41st wedding anniversary with his wife, Kathy. Russell graduated from Oakhaven High School in 1969. He began his career with Missouri Pacific Railroad, followed by 9 years at Greyhound Bus Lines. Russell retired from NWA Airlines after 20 years of service in facility maintenance followed by 7.5 years with Memphis Shelby County Airport Authority in the same field. After being diagnosed, he retired from MSCAA and began his battle with cancer. Russell loved Jesus, his family, his work, and sports. He played on two men’s softball teams until he was 50, loved to ride the Greenline on his bicycle, and once shot a hole in one at Edmund Orgill Golf course. Russell was a quiet man until he got to know people, but loved deeply, and could always be counted on, if you needed a helping hand. He made friends easily and kept many for a lifetime.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Hamilton Hurley, daughter, Rachel Michelle Hurley, of Denver, CO and son, Clayton Carl Hurley, of Memphis, and two grandsons, Julian and Ethan. Russell is predeceased by his father, Carl L. Hurley, and he leaves behind his mother, Charline B. Hurley, of Gulf Breeze, FL, his sisters, Bonnie Ambrose, of Gulf Breeze, FL, Kathleen Beaugrand, of Gulf Breeze, FL, Laura Scott of Oakland, TN. He also leaves 6 nieces, and 1 nephew.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. in Pollard Chapel at Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova with service immediately following. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 18 at Forest Hill Midtown Cemetery.
